COLD LAKE - The Cold Lake Food Bank is set to host its Coldest Night of the Year event on Feb. 22 at the food bank.
The event aims to raise funds and awareness for food insecurity in the community.
“This is the second year we are hosting this event after transitioning from a ride/walk event we held in prior years,” says Abiola Owolabi, executive director of the Cold Lake Food Bank.
The Coldest Night of the Year is the Food Bank’s key fundraiser, supporting its operations and raising awareness about the continued need for the service. Owolabi says the event is dual purpose, bringing the community together while promoting engagement and support for the cause.
Participants will start by registering upon arrival. “If they fundraise $200, they receive a toque that they can sport for the event,” Owolabi explains. “There is a sort of period of mingling and then we get everyone together, have a short speech and hit the pavement for the walk. There are two lengths depending on what people prefer.”
Along the way, walkers will be met with route marshals, there will be rest stops offering hot beverages and snacks, and signs guiding the way. After completing the 2 km or 5 km walk, participants will be welcomed back with a hot meal and a chance to win door prizes.
“We are aiming to raise $20,000 again this year and are looking to see 150 people out walking with us,” says Owolabi. “There is no associated cost, and registration can be done online or on-site on the day of the event.”
Beyond raising funds, the event seeks to shine a spotlight on food insecurity and bring the community together. “We hope to raise funds that will help us continue our operations here at the CLFB. But beyond that, we are hoping to get some people thinking, bring some awareness to food insecurity, and also bring people together.”
Owolabi says the Cold Lake Food Bank is seeking volunteers and offers various opportunities to help. She encourages those interested to register online or contact the food bank directly for more information.
