Cold Lake homeowner holds suspect until police arrive

Cold Lake - A homeowner held a suspected thief until RCMP arrived at a Cold Lake residence on July 1.

The Cold Lake RCMP responded to a call of a break and enter in progress at the residence. When they arrived on scene, they discovered the suspect in custody by the homeowner who did not know the individual, according to an RCMP media release. Through investigation, it was learned that the suspect allegedly threatened the owner with an imitation firearm.

Red Deer resident Leonard McGillis, 59, was subsequently charged with robbery with an offensive weapon, breaking and entering a residence, mischief under $5,000 dollars, theft under $5,000 dollars, uttering threats, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, pointing a firearm and two counts of weapons possession contrary to an order.

McGillis was wanted on an outstanding Canada-wide warrant for a parole violation.

McGillis was brought appeared before a justice of the peace and was remanded into custody. He will appear at the Cold Lake Court of Justice on July 10.
