COLD LAKE - The Cold Lake Ice Junior B hockey team is aiming to host the 2026 Hockey Alberta Provincials in the city.
In support of the bid, City of Cold Lake passed a motion during a special meeting on Dec. 20 to issue a letter backing the hockey club’s efforts. The tournament is slated to take place from April 1 to 5, 2026.
The urgency of the matter prompted the special meeting, as the club’s submission deadline was imminent.
“The Cold Lake Junior B Ice hockey club is looking to make a submission. I understand that the submission is to be made either this evening or Saturday (Dec. 21), so therefore they contacted us earlier in the week and wanted something by the end of the week,” explained CAO Kevin Nagoya.
City staff prepared a draft letter for council's approval to ensure it could be finalized and signed promptly.
Council’s approval also aligns with the club’s intention to seek additional funding through a Community Recreation, Arts, Culture, and Heritage Grant to offset the costs associated with hosting the provincial tournament.
Hockey Alberta will announce the winning bid by Jan. 31, 2025.
The Morinville Jets were selected to host the 2025 Provincials scheduled for April 2 to 6, 2025, according to information from the City of Cold Lake.
