COLD LAKE - The Little Free Library fridge is making its way across northern Alberta to many of the 50 Northern Lights Libraries. After its three week stay in public libraries in Mundare, Boyle, Mallaig, Tofield, Athabasca, Vegreville, and Vermilion, it arrived at the Cold Lake Public Library South Branch on June 28.
It will be there for two weeks, and anyone is welcome to stop by and take an item from it for free. It is stocked with books in a variety of genres, including some in large print, and includes a few audio books, magazines, and DVDs. As items are taken, the library staff will be replenishing the supply.
Northern Lights Library System executive director James Macdonald started the program in the summer of 2022. The idea was shared at a library conference where libraries in the system could sign up to have the little free library for a set period of time.
Paul Kosa, Library Operations Specialist at the Northern Lights Library system headquarters based in Elk Point, painted the fridge and fixed the lighting and added shelves. Macdonald stated the little free library fridge has been so popular, they acquired a second fridge to be renovated.
After its stay in Cold Lake, the Little Free Library will be making its way to the St. Paul Municipal Library located near the UFO Landing Pad for July 11.
