Musical groups come together for final performance for director, bandmaster in Cold Lake

The night was Sirant's final concert with the high school band and Beyries' last concert with the 4 Wing Band.

COLD LAKE - The Cold Lake High School band, lead by music director Douglas Sirant, and the 4 Wing Band, lead by Bandmaster Master Warrant Officer Sylvain Beyries, performed several pieces together for the first time for the school's year-end concert at the Cold Lake High School Royals Theatre, June 5.

During the hour and a half concert, the audience heard a variety of songs, which started with Fanfare for the Common Man by Copeland and ended with Disco Lives arranged by Vinson.

Midway through the evening, members of the 4 Wing Quartet, which included Sirant and Beyries, played music from the Star Wars franchise. The night was Sirant's final concert with the high school band and Beyries' last concert with the 4 Wing Band.

During the evening, there was a ceremony where the baton was passed onto the new 4 Wing Bandmaster, W/0 Adam Gaw.

Sirant, who has been teaching music for 34 years, joked the theme of the night was, "my final concert," but clarified that after this month he still plans to be involved with music by playing with the 4 Wing Band at various events.

Corrie Hiebert, a student from the high school has been playing trumpet with the high school band for three years. Although it was her last performance too, before she moves on to university, she was excited and looking forward to the evening, of which her favourite parts were the joint pieces they played with the 4 Wing band.

She added, "It's cool it's my last year, the same last year as Mr. Sirant's. It feels very ceremonious. He is a great conductor. I like him a lot."
