Innisfail Eagles play Camrose Saturday after adding another win

Birds in a three-way tie with Lacombe, Wetaskiwin for second place in the nine-team North Central Hockey League regular season play

INNISFAIL – The Innisfail Eagles are on home ice Saturday against the Camrose Bruins after recently adding to their win column.

Puck drops at the Innisfail Twin Arena Nov. 16 at 8 p.m.

The Innisfail Eagles turned on the wings to hyperdrive last weekend to claim an easy 8-0 victory over the Morinville Kings.

The home game at the Innisfail Twin Arena on Nov. 10 was a blowout from start to finish as the Birds fired 79 shots at Kings’ goalie Daniel Havard.

Innisfail led 1-0 after the first period on a goal by Josh Gette.

The Eagles made it 4-0 after two periods on goals by Braiden Leth, Chase Thudium and Chad Robinson.

In the third period Innisfail got a second goal from Thudium and two from Justin Moltzahn. Stuart Bell added the Birds final marker to close out the scoring and make the final score 8-0 for Innisfail.

Innisfail goalie Chance Griffith stopped all 19 Morinville shots to claim the shutout and victory.

The win gave the Eagles a four-win, one-loss record for the season. The Birds are in a three-way tie with Lacombe and Wetaskiwin for second place in the nine-team North Central Hockey League regular season play.

Innisfail’s archrival Stony Plain Eagles are in first place with a record of fives wins and just one loss, two points ahead of the three second place teams.

The game on Nov. 10 featured the honouring of Korean War veteran Russ Sutherland, who is now a resident of Bowden.

Sutherland joined the 2nd Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry in 1950 and the following year he was one of the first Canadians wounded in Korea.

He was told then his injury meant he could no longer serve in the infantry. and Sutherland chose to be a medic to serve other soldiers injured in battle.

After his tour in Korea Sutherland served another 20 years as a medic in the Canadian Army.
