Parks Canada anticipates the Jasper wildfires will become more active later this week as temperatures rise and relative humidity drops.
Environment Canada forecasts temperatures in the mid-20 C with a mix of sun and cloud, plus a chance of rain on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The weather will become sunny and clear for the remainder of the week, with temperatures reaching around 30 C.
Firefighter crews took advantage of the light rain and cooler temperatures on Monday by continuing to extinguish hotspots.
“Our top priority is to protect the community of Jasper from the remaining risk posed by the fire,” Parks Canada stated in a Monday evening update.
These measures include the construction of a fireguard between Pyramid Lake and Highway 16 and setting up a 12-inch-high sprinkler system along the community fireguard.
Crews are also focusing on structural protection in at-risk areas around town and the park.
Teams are now working to restore critical services and address hazards in preparation for the eventual return of evacuees.
Perimeter fencing is being put up around affected structures, and debris removal activities will begin Tuesday at commercial locations in town.
Jasper National Park remains closed and under an evacuation order.
