Seniors' Week in Lac La Biche ends with barbecue and bake sale

The event was held at noontime on Saturday, June 8 at the Lac La Biche Heritage Centre.

LAC LA BICHE - There was a very sweet atmosphere inside the Lac La Biche Heritage Centre on Saturday as the community organization hosted a barbeque and bake auction.

Saturday’s social gathering was the icing on the cake for Alberta Seniors Week events that had taken place during the week at the local senior’s centre. This included a pancake breakfast on Sunday, June 2, and a lunch on Wednesday, June 5.

With cool outdoor temperatures being less than ideal for outdoor barbequing, the cooking was moved indoors, where a decent-sized group of local seniors enjoyed hamburgers, hot dogs, baked beans and salad while sharing conversation and a few laughs. Dozens of delectable cakes, pies, and other baked sweets were on display inside the Lac La Biche Heritage Centre for people to view prior to the start of the auction.

These baked goods, which were all generously donated for the event, were auctioned off by Blake Nashim, who was all business as he took bids and shouted out numbers during the public sale.

Started in 1986, Alberta Seniors Week is a province-wide initiative which recognizes and celebrates the contributions made by seniors. Traditionally, it takes place during the first week of June. The Lac La Biche Heritage Centre puts on activities every year in recognition of Alberta Seniors Week.
