Despite some pretty chilly weather, a large group of local seniors gathered at the Bold Center community hall on Wednesday, Dec. 4 for a hot lunch and a warm welcome at the annual Seniors’ Holiday Social.
The lunchtime event, organized by Lac La Biche County FCSS, featured an afternoon of lunch, live music, games, and socializing. In addition to a good turnout of golden-age residents from the Lac La Biche area, the Christmas-themed social also had some members of Lac La Biche County council in attendance.
Kevin Pare, the Ward 2 councillor for the municipality, spoke about this year’s senior holiday social during the Dec. 10 meeting of Lac La Biche County council.
Councillor Kevin Pare described the luncheon as a good time.
“It was a full house…lots of smiling faces…very good food,” he said. “A lot of happy seniors there.”
Pare thought the weather would have kept more folks at home, but they braved the wintry conditions to attend the event and have an enjoyable time.
He gave kudos to Lac La Biche County FCSS for organizing the holiday social once again this year.
“Good to see when we put on events like this that everybody benefits,” he said.
Councillor John Mondal was also at the luncheon.
“It was very well accepted by the seniors,” he said.
The luncheon has been hosted by the municipality for several years, with each year growing in popularity ... and food choices. When the event first began, the meal was a lunch combination of soup and sandwiches – this year’s sit-down offering was a smoked turkey meal.
Anita Polturak, the manager of Lac La Biche County FCSS, said even though more people than anticipated came to the Bold Center for this year’s Seniors’ Holiday Social, there was more than enough food and good cheer to go around.
“We always plan for more anyway,” she told Lakeland This Week. “We had a really nice response from the seniors.”
