After last week’s column about the lack of dedicated art-space in Lac La Biche, several members of the art community came forward to share ideas and let residents know that art in Lac La Biche isn’t just an afterthought, it is a thriving community.
The column titled, “LLB where is your Art?” asked the question, if there is so much art in Lac La Biche, where is it? Several places sprang up in defence of the art community and although there still isn’t a dedicated place for a long-term art gallery, there are options in Lac La Biche to view some very interesting and impressive art collections. One place in particular is Cascade Flowers, a boutique on Main Street that sells art supplies and holds a variety of art classes on the side.
“I just really wanted to have a space to showcase local art and show the community the amazing talent we have here,” said Zina Postnikov, the owner of Cascade Flowers.
Postnikov is a big proponent of the Lac La Biche art scene, and has been teaching painting and sketching classes for years. She caters to all levels young and old, and displays the art right in her flower shop. Along with teaching art classes inside her store,
Postnikov also allows artists throughout Alberta to show their work in her store. The hope is that her art displays will continue to expand and offer more opportunities for those interested artists within the hamlet.
“We will be showcasing a large display of art during the Street Festival at the Pow Wow this year,” Postnikov said. “The art will be on display at the Kinsman Hall, and anyone that is interested in learning more about art lessons or the art club here in town is more than welcome to stop by.”
LIBRARY ALSO ACCEPTING ART
Along with Cascade Flowers, another place in Lac La Biche that is trying to allow for more local art exhibits is the Stuart MacPherson Library. They do accept local art to be hung surrounding the walls in the main room of the library.
“We have a schedule that changes throughout the year, we really would love to fill it with local artists and have more shows to utilize this space,” said Maureen Penn, Director of Library Services.
Recently the library featured an exhibit from renowned Yukon artist, Nicole Bauberger titled “100 Dresses”. A collection of dresses painted in different communities across Alberta.
“Not too many people know about the art component of the library,” Penn said. “We really want our local artists to know that the library is a place that can share your work with the residents of Lac La Biche.”
