History and heritage of winter activities on display at Lac La Biche museum

The exhibit at the Lac La Biche Regional Museum, titled Winter Activities, shows the history of such winter pastimes as hockey, snowshoeing, ice fishing, and snowmobiling.

LAC LA BICHE - The history and heritage of winter activities and sports in the area is being showcased in a temporary exhibit put on by the Lac La Biche Regional Museum.

Jennifer Mueller, director of the Lac La Biche Regional Museum, says the small display, which is titled Winter Activities, provides visitors with a general overview of winter activities in the Lac La Biche area, including their origins as well as the status of these seasonal pastimes.

“Although it is small, it explores the history of several winter activities such as hockey, snowshoeing, ice fishing, and snowmobiling just to name a few,” Mueller told Lakeland This Week. “The exhibit is a great way to share the history of winter activities with the public.”

The idea to establish a display to highlight and educate the public about the rich tradition of winter sports in the Lac La Biche region came about because the museum has received some sports-related artifacts over the last few years, Mueller explained.

One of the most interesting aspects of the exhibit are the hockey sticks and jerseys on display, which are tied to the long history of hockey in the Lac La Biche region.

“We hope visitors enjoy learning more about this history and seeing artifacts donated by residents of Lac La Biche,” she added.

According to Mueller, the Lac La Biche Museum installs about 20 temporary exhibits at the museum each year. These are in addition to the 50 temporary exhibits hosted at off-site locations such as the Bold Center and the Stuart MacPherson Public Library.

Mueller stated these exhibits cover a wide range of topics such as the history and heritage of Lac La Biche, natural history and art. Visitors who come to the Lac La Biche Museum throughout 2025 can look forward to viewing exhibits about vintage toys and games, contemporary Indigenous art, 1980s technology, and the legacy of tourism in Lac La Biche.

“Temporary exhibits such as the Winter Activities exhibit allow the museum to not only share information with the public about various fascinating topics but also allow the museum to showcase the wide variety of artifacts the museum has in its collections,” said Mueller.

The Lac La Biche Regional Museum is located at 9910 101 Avenue in Lac La Biche.
