LAC LA BICHE - Both the J.A. Williams (JAWS) High School boys and girls Sharks JV volleyball teams finished first place overall in the districts tournament, which took place on Nov. 5 at the Bold Center.
The competition drew teams from the Lac La Biche, Bonnyville, and Cold Lake areas.
Sam Abougouche, the principal of JAWS, says the tournament and the season as a whole was a resounding success. All teams showcased their skills and sportsmanship, providing fans with thrilling matches and memorable moments, he said.
“Both of our junior varsity teams emerged victorious, winning the district tournament,” Abougouche told Lakeland This Week, adding that the up-and-coming Grade 9-only junior girls’ team also took part in the tournament – and did well. “Our Grade 9 girls team played exceptionally well and finished in the top four.”
According to Abougouche, more than 30 JAWS student-athletes participated in the tournament.
“They were great ambassadors for our school and excelled as the season progressed,” he said.
Abougouche went on to thank not only the Bold Center staff for their support for their support, but also the volunteer coaches who dedicated their time and talents to work with the volleyball players.
Their efforts, he said, were instrumental in making the sporting event a highlight of the school and the local community.
“We look forward to building on this success in future seasons,” he stated.
JAWS will now be hosting the Northeast Alberta Schools' Athletic Association volleyball zones tournament from Nov. 15-16, which also takes place at the Bold Center and will include several high school teams from across the Lakeland region.
