Jr. NBA program teaches kids fundamentals of basketball

The program, which is held at Lac La Biche's Bold Center, teaches skills such as dribbling, passing, shooting, defense, as well as understanding basic game strategies.

LAC LA BICHE - The Jr NBA program is an opportunity for young people to develop their basketball skills in a fun, supportive environment, says Hannah Williams, a recreation programmer with Lac La Biche County.

According to Williams, the Jr NBA program, which takes place in 12 sessions at Lac La Biche’s Bold Center, focuses on building foundational basketball skills such as dribbling, passing, shooting, defense, as well as understanding basic game strategies.

“It's designed for both beginners who are just discovering basketball and more experienced players looking to refine their abilities,” she told Lakeland This Week.

The Jr NBA program, Williams said, runs once a week for 60 minutes, and provides participants with a balanced mix of instruction, practice, and gameplay.

In addition to giving young athletes a foundation in basketball, the program also helps them develop key skills and a love for the sport. Beyond physical benefits such as improved fitness and coordination, participants also build self-confidence, learn about how to work as a team, and develop a sense of discipline and commitment.

By the end of the program, Williams said, participants gain confidence in their abilities, improved coordination, and better teamwork skills – all of which help them excel on and off the court.

“It’s an excellent stepping stone for kids who are interested in playing basketball competitively or simply want to enjoy the sport recreationally.”

Williams said Lac La Biche County has been running basketball programs for the past five years. She explained that instructors in the Jr NBA program are trained recreation staff, as well as basketball enthusiasts.

“Their knowledge, combined with their enthusiasm for teaching, creates a positive and engaging learning environment for the participants.”

The program costs $100-$125 per participant for 12 sessions, which includes all instruction and equipment. Registration can be done online through Lac La Biche County’s Bold Center website or in person at the Bold Center.
