LAC LA BICHE - A few days before Christmas, some members of the Lac La Biche Boxing Club and their coaches participated in a fundraising fight card near Edmonton that drew boxers from clubs across Alberta and western Canada.

Andy Cardinal, Rio Ladoucer, and Muhammad Al Hamida, along with Ken Scullion, head coach of the Lac La Biche Boxing Club, and co-coach Jeremy Trimble, were at the Dr. Adams Grand Prix of Boxing event, which took place in Stony Plain on Dec. 21.

While Al Hamida didn’t compete, fellow boxers Cardinal and Ladoucer were among the fighters who stepped into the ring. Ladoucer went up against Tyson Bunbury of the Grande Prairie-based Swan City Boxing Club while Cardinal fought Cold Lake’s Jayden St. Croix.

According to Scullion, Cardinal was rewarded for his hard work in the ring.

“Andy won best boxer of the night,” he told Lakeland This Week.

Scullion explained that the dinner and fight card, which is held each year and showcases the talents of boxers in Alberta, raises money that goes back to the participating boxing clubs. The annual event is named in honour of Dr. James Adams, a Sherwood Park-based physician who Scullion says has been a strong supporter of amateur boxing in Alberta.

“The dinner card raised more than $3,000 dollars and that money was donated to clubs,” he said.

Each of the clubs that participated in the Dr. Adams Grand Prix of Boxing, put their names into a hat for the chance to receive money raised from the card. Of those clubs, three were picked to receive donations, with each organization being presented with a $1,000 cheque. [JH1]

While the Lac La Biche Boxing Club did not take home any of the money raised from the 2024 event, Scullion is hopeful that the club will have better luck next time.
