Around 2,000 residents of the Lac La Biche region who were enjoying a holiday on Monday, Aug. 5, briefly found themselves in the dark as the lights went out for a couple of hours in the afternoon.

Peter Brodsky, a spokesperson with Fortis Alberta, stated that the power outage began at noon, affecting 2,000 customers in Lac La Biche and County, Beaver Lake Cree Nation, and Heart Lake First Nation. According to the Lac La Biche County social media page, the Bold Center was closed briefly due to this outage.

Brodsky explained that 500 customers were restored by 12:25 p.m. by crews rerouting their power while the remaining 1,500 were restored at 1:40 p.m. once repairs were completed.

“A downed wire was determined to be the cause,” Brodsky told Lakeland This Week.
