LAC LA BICHE - The Lac La Biche Heritage Society recently received a $2,059 grant to go help fund workshops that will offer information to seniors.
Stacey St. Jean, executive director of the Lac La Biche Heritage Society, says the grant was provided by Lac La Biche County FCSS and is for an upcoming free series called Life Steps Workshops, which will be held at the seniors’ centre from Feb. 10 to May 12.
According to St. Jean, the $2,059 grant will fund half the costs of the workshop.
From February to May, the Lac La Biche Heritage Society will host seven bi-weekly workshops focused on life changes that occur as people age. The sessions put a spotlight on a variety of topics, including frauds and scams, home care, home modifications and safety in the home, emergency planning, as well as pharmacy medication reviews, and wills and estate planning.
Alberta Health Services is assisting with four of the workshops while representatives from Portage College Public Legal Education, IDA Crescent Drugs in Lac La Biche and Randolph R. Benson law firm will be presenting at others.
The first of the series of workshops, Frauds and Scams, takes place on Feb. 10 and is being presented by Julie Matthews, a consumer protection expert and fraud prevention educator.
“Life changes will affect everyone at some point and giving people the knowledge will help with their confidence and fear about these changes,” says St. Jean.
Those who are interested in signing up to attend the workshops can contact the Lac La Biche Heritage Society at 780-623-8350 or [email protected]. People can also stop by the centre located at 10112-102 Ave in the hamlet of Lac La Biche to fill out a form.
“They are all free for seniors, those with elderly parents and anyone wanting to learn more information about the topics, but we ask that people sign up so we have an idea of how many will be there and how to purchase our snacks and refreshments,” says St. Jean.
