"Homecoming" is the story of an aging farmer who's attempting to retire, and is having some difficulty adjusting to the changes in his life.
The fire at Portage College's Lac La Biche campus kept them off the stage at a critical juncture, but the Lac La Biche Players are still planning to begin performances of their new show, titled "Homecoming," on Friday.
Director and lead actor Ken Yackimec says he and the other actors have had less experience with their newly constructed set than they would like - the college campus closed late last week after a fire broke out in a workshop - but as they say, the show must go on and he's confident it will be a success.
"I think we'll put on a really enjoyable show," Yackimec told the POST.
"Homecoming" is the story of an aging farmer who's attempting to retire, and is having some difficulty adjusting to the changes in his life.
It's a comedic and light-hearted story, Yackimec says, and it's one that many members of this community can relate to.
"It's in a setting and with characters that I think people will identify with," he said. "It's very much a Prairies story but I think anyone with a farming background will feel a connection with it."
Yackimec told the POST the play's author, Saskatchewan playwright Leeanne Minogue, has ex pressed interest in attending one of the Players' performances.
Yackimec says he chose to perform "Home coming" because the play is Canadian and a comedy, and those two attributes aren't always easy to find together.
"It's well written," he said. "There's good dialogue in there. It's quite witty in spots."
The first performance of the play is expected to be on Friday at 7:30 p.m., followed by a second performance Saturday evening and a matinee on Sunday. There will also be two evening performances next Friday and Saturday.
Tickets to the evening performances are $15 each ($12 for seniors and students) and admission to the Sunday matinee will be $8. Tickets may be purchased from the Portage College general store or from other local businesses.
