Lac La Biche seniors centre hosts Seniors Week meal and bake auction

The event was held at the Lac La Biche Heritage Society on June 4.

LAC LA BICHE – Members of the Lac La Biche Heritage Society, special guests, and representatives of Lac La Biche County gathered on June 4 for an event that was part of Alberta Seniors’ Week activities.

Those in attendance were treated to musical entertainment performed by students from Light of Christ Catholic School, who were led by local musician Brian Deheer.

Remarks were also made by Lac La Biche County Mayor Paul Reutov and Les Diachinsky before everyone sat down for a roast beef lunch.

Various homemade sweets such as cakes, pies and brownies were sold to the highest bidders during a bake auction that took place inside the local seniors’ centre.

Diachinsky said the dinner and bake auction, which is put on annually as a fundraiser for the Lac La Biche Heritage Society, is one of the major functions hosted by the organization during the year.

“Other than our Christmas party, this is the biggest event throughout the year, this room being full today,” he said.

The significance of Seniors’ Week, Diachinsky continued, is that it recognizes the contributions seniors have made to the community.

The Lac La Biche Heritage Society will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in September. Many people from the Lac La Biche area, who are now in their golden years, were instrumental in getting the building up and running back in the mid-1970s.

“They acquired the funding, the sweat equity, the carpenter work, the plumbing work . . . that was all done by these people,” he said.
