LAKELAND – For Sheldon Germain, being bestowed with the King Charles III Coronation Medal is an exceptional honour.

On March 10, Germain, who is the superintendent for the Lakeland Catholic School Division (LCSD), received the award from Fort McMurray-Cold Lake MP Laila Goodridge, on behalf of the Governor General of Canada.

This recognition is awarded to Canadians who have made valuable contributions to the country through public service. Germain has spent 30 years as an educator. He has also been a sports coach and a councillor with the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.

“It is gratifying to be acknowledged for my contributions to the school system, and as well as my service in regional government with the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo,” Germain said. “This medal is a testament to the power of service, faith, and steadfast commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.”

Germain said as he continued to gain experience, he had opportunities to serve people in different capacities, whether as a college volleyball coach, teacher, school principal, or a municipal councillor.

In all these roles, he has aimed to keep people at the centre of his work.

“Currently, as the superintendent of Lakeland Catholic, it is a wonderful opportunity to work with the school and faith communities of Lac La Biche, Cold Lake, Bonnyville, and Waskatenau,” he said.

Goodridge stated it was an honour to recognize him for the lifetime of work he has done in service to his community and for the students throughout northeastern Alberta.

“Sheldon has quietly worked hard making our schools and community better for 30 plus years. He is truly deserving of this recognition,” said Goodridge.

Anna Brockhoff, board chair of the Lakeland Catholic School Division (LCSD) board of trustees, said it is a privilege to have Germain leading the school division.

“His commitment to excellence, collaborative leadership, and dedication to students and families exemplify the very best of Catholic education. This prestigious recognition affirms what we already know - Mr. Germain leads with integrity and vision to serve our schools and the broader community,” Brockhoff said.
