LAKELAND - A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for much of the Lakeland region, Tuesday afternoon.

"Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain," reads information from Environment Canada, dated July 23 shortly after 1 p.m.

"Thunderstorms are expected to develop late this afternoon. Some of these thunderstorms may become severe. Severe thunderstorms are expected to last into the evening," according to the alert.

"Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall."

The alert is in effect for an area that includes Lac La Biche, Bonnyville, Cold Lake and St. Paul.

The area - and much of the province - also remains under an "Air Quality Advisory" due to wildfire smoke.

"Air quality and visibility due to wildfire smoke can fluctuate over short distances and can vary considerably from hour to hour. During heavy smoke conditions, everyone is at risk regardless of their age or health. The fine particles in wildfire smoke pose the main health risk," according to Environment Canada.
