LAC LA BICHE - Plans are con-tinuing at Lac La Biche County Libraries for the annual Library Con event, offering sci-fi and fantasy-related fun and activities, including a chance enter a dress-up con-test and win prizes. The event is still more than a month away, but organizers are con-tent to put in the early work.
Lac La Biche County Libraries will be hosting the ninth annual Library Con on January 6 from 11 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. at the Stuart MacPherson Library.
“This is a free family event that brings a taste of Comic Con to the Lac La Biche community, where people can get out of the home and meet other people with the same interests,” says Laney Smith, programming coordinator for Lac La Biche County Libraries.
Those who attend the 2024 Library Con will have an opportunity to participate in a wide range of activities. In addition to laser tag, craft and vendor booths, and a photo booth, there are costume and make-a-sci-fi-video contests and even a Space Travel Quest.
Although people are free to dress as they wish, the theme for the upcoming event is Science-Fiction.
“In past events we have had anime, Disney, Star Wars, renaissance, just to name a few,” she explained.
Smith continued by saying that the Sci-Fi Video Contest was created specifically for this year’s event.
According to the Lac La Biche County Libraries website, those wishing to participate have until Jan. 4, 2024, to enter by creating a science fiction video that is no longer than five minutes in duration. Winners will receive an $80 Boston Pizza gift card and a family pass to Portage Pool.
The winner in each category will be chosen by way of viewer’s choice, with the contest ending 3 p.m. on January 6. Details about the event are available at the library's online links.
Smith said the last Library Con, which took place at the main branch this past January had a great turnout, including 162 attendees, vendors, volunteers, and staff.
“We hope to surpass that number in 2024,” she said.
