Oktoberfest will be having their 5th annual event on Oct.15 at the Owl River Recreation Centre.

“This year I hired someone to research and decorate it like the real Oktoberfestival in Germany,” said event organizer Judy Thomson. “It should be really nice.”

Thompson has been organizing the event for the past five years and she started it because she wanted to get more involved in the Owl River community as well make use of the Recreation Centre that the community has.

“We were trying to get things going for a while and this seems to be going really well,” said Thompson. “We add a little more to it every year.”

This year the Oktoberfest will have traditional German Bratwurst and spaetzle along with other traditional favourites such as sauerkraut, pork hock, and German potato salad. Most importantly, the festival will be having a few kinds of beer.

“We are not going with draft this year because it’s too hard without a keg, but we will be having cans of beer,” said Thompson. “We will of course have at least one German beer and a few regular beers also. We also have beer steins this year.”

The event is a dinner and dance with local disc jockeys Clare and Alex Richard. Thompson plans to have the DJs play some classic Oktoberfest tunes such as polkas, waltzes, and 2-steps but she said she won’t really know how things go until she can get a feel for the crowd when they get there.

Last year, the event saw over 100 people coming through its doors and Thompson expects nothing less this year.

Tickets for the even are listed at $20 for adults, $10 for youth (7-16 years old), and children ^ and under get in for free. For further information please call Judy Thompson at 780-623-7027 or 780-404-4086.
