LAKELAND - A freezing rain warning is in effect for a large portion of the Lac La Biche, Bonnyville, Cold Lake and St. Paul regions, Thursday morning.

According to Environment Canada, "Freezing rain is expected to begin early this morning. Freezing rain will change to snow this afternoon. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery."

The warning asks people to drive slow in the slippery conditions.

"Watch for taillights ahead and maintain a safe following distance. Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions," according to Environment Canada.

Just before 9:30 a.m., Lac La Biche County released information stating road conditions were "hazardous due to freezing rain. We have deployed all of our available resources to help manage the situation."

The freezing rain is expected to turn to snow later in the afternoon, Jan. 16, while the wind is expected to increase and temperatures drop.

Closer to Edmonton, a snow squall warning is in effect this morning, along with a wind warning, according to Environment Canada.

"Snow squalls cause weather conditions to vary considerably; changes from clear skies to heavy snow within just a few kilometres are common. Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow," according to Environment Canada.
