Dr. Swift Middle School has stepped up to help the Malofe and Castor family who lost their home in a fire two weeks ago.

The students spent two mornings last week sorting and recycling cans and bottles donated by Devon Energy and raised $1,900 for the family, said school counsellor Mandi Gosselin.

Gosselin signed the school up for the program, Cash for Cans, in April for a different fundraiser. But because their name was just called up and one of the children affected by the accident is a student at the school, she decided that the money should go to the family.

“We thought it was a great way for us to help them out,” said Gosselin, adding that students were happy to take part. “Once they found out what it was going toward, they were much more eager to help out.”

Gosselin said that they are grateful to Devon for the donation and to Randy Brezinski, an employee of Devon who volunteers to help with the program.
