Voyageurs soccer squads scoreless in home openers, next games Thursday

Heavy rain could affect Thursday games against Lakeland at Bold Center fields

It was a tough start to the regular season for both Portage Voyageurs soccer teams at their home openers last Sunday.

The women's team was shutout 16-0 by the visiting NAIT Ooks and the men's team dropped their game against the Ooks men's squad 3-0.

The matches were scheduled to be the second games of the Alberta Colleges Athletics Conference season, but games in Edmonton against the Concordia Thunder were cancelled on Saturday due to air quality issues in the city.

Playing in front of a decent-sized crowd under somewhat smoky and hazy skies on Sunday at the Bold Center field, the Voyageurs had some challenges facing the fast-moving NAIT squads.

Rainy Thursday

The third regular season game for both Portage teams, another home stand, this time against the Lakeland College Rustlers, is slated for Sept. 12. But with more weather concerns – this time heavy, steady rains – those games may also be postponed.

If the games go ahead, the women's game will begin at 4:30 pm. with the men's game to follow.

Presently, the men Voyageurs hold fifth spot in their seven-team ACAC North division, while the women are in last place. On Aug. 24, two weeks before the start of the regular season, the men’s team hosted the Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks in an afternoon exhibition match which the Kodiaks won 2-0.
