Voyageurs win first games of regular hockey season

Next games against Ooks November 1 and 2

The Portage College Voyageurs men’s hockey team kicked off their regular 2024-2025 season last weekend with a pair of wins against the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder.

The Voyageurs won their away game 5-4 on Friday, Oct. 18, and emerged with a 4-3 victory over the Thunder during the team’s home opener the following night in Lac La Biche. Following these wins, Portage holds second place in its seven-team Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) North Division, one spot behind Briercrest College.

Even though Portage eventually won the first game against Concordia with an overtime goal, it wasn’t until the second period of the game that Voyageur forward Mason Beck scored the team's first goal, opening the door for four more, including the game-winner in overtime.

A decent-sized crowd filled the stands at the Bold Center the next night for the Voyageurs’ home opener, which got underway on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m.

The Voyageurs wasted no time getting back into scoring mode on their way to the  4-3 win, scoring two unanswered goals in the first period.

Tye Evans got Portage College onto the scoreboard two more times in the second period to secure the team’s second win of the weekend.

The Voyageurs look to extend their season-starting win-streak on Friday, Nov. 1 and Saturday Nov. 2 with a pair of away and home games against the NAIT OOKs. The Nov. 2 home game at the Bold Center starts at 7 pm.
