Workshop lets people create Valentine's Day cards inspired by vintage cards

The event took place on Feb. 7 at the Stuart MacPherson Library in Lac La Biche and featured Valentine's Day cards that were over a century old.

LAC LA BICHE - On Feb. 7, people who stopped by the Stuart MacPherson Public Library in Lac La Biche were able to create and decorate cards inspired by old-fashioned Valentine’s Day cards.

According to Tara Jacklin, curator for the Lac La Biche Museum, throughout the year, the museum works in conjunction with the local library to run an offshoot of the museum program, Lac La Biche Explorers, focusing on subjects from the past.

“The library hosts us one Friday evening a month to run programming on a variety of historical themes,” Jacklin told Lakeland This Week. “We aim to include at least one hands on activity . . . and provide a healthy snack.”

For the Feb. 7 session of the Lac La Biche Explorers program, staff decided to go with a Valentine’s Day theme, which was centred around historic cards from the annual occasion of love, chocolates, and roses.

Some of these cards, Jacklin explained, date to the mid-1900s, while others date between 1884-1901.

“As such, we did paper quilling, very popular with aristocratic English ladies, in the shape of hearts. As inspiration for their cards, we had a selection of cards from our collection,” she said.
