Alberta’s auditor general launched an investigation into the procurement and contracting processes at Alberta Health and Alberta Health Services (AHS) on Feb. 6.
The investigation follows a bombshell report alleging former AHS CEO Athana Mentzelopoulos was fired after launching an internal investigation, and the AHS board dismissed after it recommended Mentzelopoulos take her findings to the RCMP.
“At this time, the examination pertains to Chartered Surgical Facilities, Medication (ibuprofen or acetaminophen), and COVID-19 Personal Protection Equipment,” said Auditor General Doug Wylie.
“The examination is looking at the effectiveness of management and control processes - including governance and oversight - ensuring value for Albertans while addressing concerns or allegations related to contracting and potential conflicts of interest,” said Wylie in an e-mailed statement.
President of the United Nurses of Alberta Heather Smith said the allegations “demand a timely and formal investigation with a comprehensive report that is open to the public.”
