BRFA hosts fire hall open house featuring burgers, ice cream and airbags

Station 5 Bonnyville opened it bay doors while firefighters welcomed the community in for its annual open house on Oct. 11. The event featured a special airbag demonstration with explosive results.

BONNYVILLE - Station 5 Bonnyville opened its bay doors and Bonnyville Regional Fire Authority (BRFA) firefighters welcomed the community to the fire hall for the annual Fire Prevention Week open house on Oct. 11.

Firefighters served up free hotdogs, burgers and ice cream to the large crowd that filled the fire hall from 4-8 p.m.

At 6 p.m., BRFA Fire Prevention Officer Dwayne Ethier explained the importance of never sitting with legs up on the dash while travelling in a vehicle. Ethier's presentation was followed by an explosive demonstration that featured a dummy with its legs on the passenger side dash in a semi-deconstructed vehicle.

When the airbags were deployed, the dummy's legs were pushed out towards the side of the car with intense force.

Fire Prevention Week took place from Oct. 9 to 15. This year's theme was "Fire won't wait. Plan your escape," which encouraged people to have a plan in place to exit a home if a fire occurs.
