Bus safety training coming to students this month

With the school season well underway, and student safety a priority, the Northern Lights Public School (NLPS) Division will once again be offering the RideSAFE program.

LAKELAND - With the school season well underway, and student safety a priority, the Northern Lights Public School (NLPS) Division will once again be offering the RideSAFE program.

Designed to teach students about overall bus safety, the RideSAFE program includes classroom discussions and exercises along with rehearsing scenarios on a school bus to promote general safety and emergency preparedness. Although the program is aimed at students in kindergarten to Grade 6, it can be modified for older students.

RideSAFE events at area schools are timed to coincide with School Bus Safety Week, which takes place during the third week of October.

The program is being facilitated by the school division’s senior driving instructor and will be offered at various locations later this month.

According to Nicole Garner, the communications and public relations manager for Northern Lights, school officials are in the process of confirming the specifics on where and when the exercises will be offered this year.

“There is a bit of a condensed timeframe this year because our instructor has been busy with training bus drivers at our driving school,” Garner said, adding that a news release will most likely be sent out once dates and locations have been confirmed.
