Even if they don't catch a fish, they'll hook a prize.
All the young fisher-folk at the Summer Days Children's Fish Derby on Sunday, August 6 will reel in a gift just for dropping a line into the Alexander Hamilton Trout Pond.
"There's a grand prize for the biggest fish caught, and then everybody gets a prize that enters — nobody goes home without a prize," says Hanna Taha, with the Lac La Biche Muslim Ladies Association, the hosts of the fun and family-themed event.
The Children's Fish Derby has been organized by the association for several years. Taha says it's easy to come back each year thanks to the community support and the big smiles of the youngsters.
"It's a family event, the kids come with a parent or guardian, maybe a grandparent and it's a great way to spend some of the day together," she said.
The derby runs on Sunday from 10 am to 1 pm. All the kids need are a fishing rod and a little bait.
"It gives all kids an opportunity to go fishing," says Taha, who is a fishing enthusiast. "They don't need a boat to have a great time."
The Alexander Hamilton Park is stocked regularly with trout. In past years, Taha said the fish have been nibbling.
"Last year I think about 20 kids brought up a fish. They might not be huge fish, but the smiles on the faces are pretty big," she said.
There is no registration fee to enter the children's derby, but organizers encourage families to show up a little early so some details. Entrants have to be 15 or younger to enter.
Prize Donations welcome
Taha says the event draws a variety of ages and experiences.
"We've had toddlers out there learning to fish with their families. It's such a nice event."
Organizers say that business or personal prize donations are more than welcome. Anyone wanting to donate to the derby can contact Taha directly at 780-623-1142.
The Summer Days Children's Fish Derby is one of several activities hosted by community groups over the busy weekend. Along with the Ladies Muslim Association, the Rotary Club, Kinsmen Club and Heritage Society are part of the planning committee.
