On Jan. 14, the Kryla Ukrainian Dancers invited the community to take part in ringing in Ukrainian New Year at the Bonnyville C2 centre.

BONNYVILLE - The Bonnyville and District Centennial Centre was filled with laughter and dance on Saturday night as groups of Ukrainian dancers of all ages took to the stage, performing for a large audience on Malanka, also known as the Ukrainian New Year.

The event was hosted by the Kryla Ukrainian Dancers, who invited the entire community to take part in ringing in the New Year according to the Julian Calendar, including Ukrainian refugees new to the Lakeland to the generations of Ukrainians who have settled in the region over the years and everyone else who calls Canada home.

A special tribute was held at the end of Saturday's concert to honour local Ukrainian dancer Miriam Godziuk.

Taking part in the final dance and filling the stage were dozens of Kryla dancers, past and present, who wore a T-shirt that read 'We dance for Miriam.' Miriam passes away Oct. 16, 2022.
