Goodridge 4-H Beef Club heads into busy season

The Goodridge 4-H Beef Club entered busy season on Feb. 23 with their annual public speaking event.

GOODRIDGE - The Goodridge 4-H Beef Club entered busy season on Feb. 23 with their annual public speaking event.

The event went very well with a new addition to the program this year. The five Cleaver members (6-8 years olds) recited speeches and jokes as entertainment between the 4-H member speeches and impromptus.

It was super cute to see them on the stage and the audience was looking forward to hearing what they have to say next year. They were so entertaining that one of the volunteer judges, Ruth Purdy commented that the Junior members better look out because the upcoming Cleavers are going to give them some competition next year.

Members and spectators heard a variety of topics from members, including a recap of a trip with YouTube sensation Trapper Chum, a personal love of basketball, and the science behind dreams. All members from first timers to seasoned speakers had a successful day.

All first-place winners moved on to compete at the St. Paul District Communications event, which was held on March 1 in Elk Point. All members placed at the district level, which was a huge success for this little club.

A busy 4-H season also included the club’s farm tour on March 16, where members toured each others farms and got to see the progress on project steers and heifers.

Members got to discuss the types of feeds they are using with their projects, and the training work they are doing. The tour was followed by a potluck supper at Goodridge Hall.

The members then worked out details for their next activity, the club mini show. This is a private event where members grow their experience grooming their projects, and take their projects into a show ring for the first time as a training experience. This is to prepare for the club’s annual achievement day coming up on May 24.
