LAC LA BICHE - It's been a power-play of work inside and out at Lac La Biche's W. J. Cadzow Hospital over the last few weeks.

Crews have been busy working on power upgrades at the healthcare centre, as Alberta Health Services is replacing the emergency power generator, the main power feeder, the emergency power transfer switch as well as refurbishing the main distribution switchboard.Emergency generators supply emergency power to the facility so that patient care can be maintained during a power outage.

"Maintaining equipment is critical to ensuring the highest quality care in our health care facilities, and having an upgraded power system better prepares us for emergencies," says Lisa LaFerriere with AHS. "For example, a new emergency generator will ensure back-up power is provided at the healthcare centre in the unlikely event the regular power supply is disrupted by weather or other factors."

Last week, a tall crane was on the hospital grounds, assisting crews with assembly and placement of new equipment.

Construction on the projects began in March and should be completed by the end of August.

"We anticipate that this project will cost approximately $3 million," say AHS officials.

Funding for the upgrades comes from Government of Alberta’s Infrastructure Maintenance Program.
