Man and youth charged following shooting in Cold Lake

LAKELAND - RCMP have charged two people in connection to the shooting death of a man that occurred in the parking lot of a gas station on Highway 28 in Cold Lake on Aug. 9.

The RCMP Major Crimes Unit have charged Bryan Collins, 25, of Elizabeth Métis Settlement, and a 17-year-old male youth, who cannot be named as per the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Both have been been charged with second degree murder in the death of Kevin Evans, 41, of Elizabeth Métis Settlement, according to RCMP.

Collins is set to appear in Cold Lake Provincial Court via CCTV on Aug. 19. The youth is set to appear in St. Paul Provincial Youth Court on Aug. 26.

"The two other persons who were detained in relation to this incident were not formally charged," according to RCMP. The 2018 Black Nissan Murano that police had been looking for has also been recovered and police are not seeking any other suspects.

As this matter is now before the courts, no further information will be released by RCMP.

Background

Cold Lake RCMP and RCMP Major Crimes Unit began investigating after an adult male was found dead at the Petro Canada Gas Station on Highway 28 in Cold Lake.

On Aug. 9, at about 1 a.m., RCMP were dispatched to a report that a male had been shot in the parking lot of the gas station. Four suspects left the area and police had been looking for a stolen 2018 black Nissan Murano.

Then, in the evening of Aug. 10, residents were being asked to stay away from an area northeast of Vilna where a number of RCMP detachments were working to locate a male suspect in connection to the incident.

Smoky Lake, Boyle, Redwater and St. Paul RCMP had the Bonnie Lake area, four kilometres northeast of Vilna along Highway 28, contained. Police were asking the to public stay away from the area.

RCMP later updated the situation, stating a male suspect was arrested and taken into custody at about 3 a.m. on Aug. 11, near Highway 28 and Range Road 130 by RCMP Police Dog Services and officers that responded to the area.
