Meet the mutts

North America observed National Mutt Day on July 31, celebrating mixed breed dogs, and to bring attention to mutts in need of a home. In the Lakeland, many mutts continue to seek their forever family.

LAKELAND – North America observed the National Mutt Day yesterday, celebrating mixed breed dogs, and to bring attention to mutts in need of home.

In the Lakeland, many mutts continue to seek a family. Among them is Milo, presently with the Bonnyville and District SPCA. Milo is a large male adult labrador retriever with creamy yellow fur. He’s also house-trained, neutered, and microchipped. Milo was born around May 2020.

Milo was previously a stray. But he is gets along with male and female dogs, as well as children, according to Judith Rodriguez, shelter manager with the SPCA. However, he’s a little jumpy, so supervision may be required when in the presence of toddlers.

Rodriguez said Milo is a “rockstar” on the leash. He’s also “sweet, playful, vocal,” and lets people know when someone may be at the door, she said. Currently, Milo works with SPCA’s dog trainer to “overcome his separation anxiety.” A house with another calm dog will help Milo, believes the SPCA.

Lac La Biche

In Lac La Biche, the Lac La Biche Regional Humane Society is now offering a 50 per cent adoption fee discount for four dogs who have been with them for some time.

Rubin, a black Labrador, was a stray picked up by the County of Lac La Biche and arrived at the shelter on March 8.

Dexter, a Brindle Boxer Pitbull mix, was a stray who arrived at the shelter on Feb. 9.

Steven, a German Shepherd mix, was also a stray picked up by the County on March 25

Lou is a unique mixed breed with a fur a blend of orange and amber. Lou was brought to the shelter on Feb. 13.

St. Paul

Among the dogs the St. Paul Animal Shelter currently looking for homes is Dixie. A young mutt just about a year old, Dixie is spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped. She is a mix of a Greek Harehound, and a black and tan Coonhound. Dixie loves to play and gets along well with people, other dogs, and children too.
