Northern Flights: Shorebird shapes in silhouette in Lac La Biche

Northern Flights - autumn light in Lac La Biche
birds-and-m-shapes
Silhouetted birds and a Lac La Biche streetlight make many rounded shapes with the autumn western sky as a backdrop.

It's not all about the Aurora Borealis, you know ... The lower angle of light in the autumn months makes for stark contrasts in the camera's lens for those looking for a unique take on the local landscape in the daytime hours too.

In this photo, a flock of shore birds flies over a streetlight in the parking lot at the Lac La Biche's Bold Center with the western sky turning to dusk in the background. The dark silhouettes of the birds make dozens of 'm' shapes, like the ones used by artists – young and old – in paintings and drawings ... and like the one made by the street light in the foreground.

Or- it's just a nighttime photo our newsroom thought was cool ... that wasn't of the northern lights that have illuminated the nighttime skies of the region all week.

Time flies

It could also be a reminder that time is really flying - as in daylight time. From October 1 to October 10, the Lac La Biche region has lost 35 minutes of daylight hours, going from eleven and a half hours from sunrise to sunset on October 1 to 10 hours and 55 minutes from the 7:48 am sunrise to the 10:50 pm sunset on Thursday October 10.
