Sky-gazers were treated to more than two hours of intense northern lights on Tuesday night over the Lac La Biche region. Starting at about 11 pm, the aurora borealis night-show painted flashes of colour above the horizon.
The northern lights are the result of solar storms on the sun, sending energized particles that are attracted to the magnetic poles of the earth. In recent weeks, increased solar activity has created more displays of the aurora borealis.
For more details on the best times and places to catch a northern lights show, the University of Alberta has a website called AuroraWatch that even includes "Red Alerts" advising residents when it's prime time for a show.
