Waves crash onto a portion of the Mission Beach area at McGrane Beach. AHS has issued a fecal alert for the waters in the area.

Elevated levels of fecal bacteria have been found in the waters around the McGrane Beach in the Mission area.

In an announcement issued Thursday afternoon, Alberta Health Services officials are telling the public not to swim or wade at this beach area, effective immediately.

"At current levels, gastrointestinal illness may result from ingestion of the water at McGrane Beach on Lac La Biche," says  AHS spokesperson Gayleen Froese. "As well, there is the possibility of skin, ear and eye infections with water contact."

Water-borne organisms, including fecal bacteria, can also cause vomiting and diarrhea.

AHS Environmental Public Health officers will continue to monitor the water quality at the McGrane Beach area.

The advisory will remain in effect until further notice.

Fecal contamination can occur naturally from bird and wildlife leavings or from land-based drainage or seepage.

The last time fecal bacteria levels forced a public health warning at the McGrane Beach was in July of 2019.
