HEINSBURG - Vermilion RCMP responded to a small plane crash on June 6, near Hwy. 640, between Range Road 45 and 50. The crash sent one man to hospital.

The report of the crash came in at about 7:55 p.m. The plane had crashed in a slough.

"Vermillion RCMP and emergency medical services attended and located a small single engine Cessna plane with the lone pilot, a 65-year-old male from Clandonald, Alta., trapped in the plane with injuries," according to RCMP. "The plane had sustained damages to the wing and body."

Vermillion River County Rescue were able to extricate the pilot who was taken to the hospital for treatment and air lifted by STARS to an Edmonton hospital for further treatment of serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

"Early indications are that the pilot attempted to land on a private airstrip and the aircraft wing hit a tree on the downwards path causing difficulties with the landing," according to RCMP.

The Transportation Safety Board will be doing an investigation into the cause of the crash. An RCMP Collision Reconstructionist also attended the scene.
