BEAVER LAKE - The suspect of an RCMP incident that forced residents living in the Beaver Lake Cree Nation to shelter in place on Saturday, has been arrested, charged, and released from custody.
Police say that 25-year-old Beaver Lake Cree Nation resident Quinten Wyatt Cardinal is now facing charges of careless use of a firearm, discharging a firearm, possession of a prohibited weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
Cardinal was arrested on Nov. 19 in relation to a report received by Lac La Biche RCMP the morning before concerning a weapons complaint on Beaver Lake Cree Nation.
RCMP say when they arrived at the location of the complaint at around 9:30 a.m. on Saturday where a male suspect with a firearm ran into a nearby wooded area. RCMP issued a shelter in place to residents and secured the area. Lac La Biche RCMP, Police Dog Services and Air services attended the area in attempts to locate the man, but were unsuccessful.
The next day, police say they located and arrested a suspect without incident. RCMP say he was brought before a justice of the peace and released.
The shelter in place caution was lifted when the suspect was arrested. Beaver Lake Cree Nation has a population of about 400 people living with a 60 square-kilometre rural area.
Cardinal is expected to be in the Alberta Court of Justice in Lac La Biche on Dec. 11 to face the charges.
