IRON RIVER – The wait is finally over for the the youth and parents of Iron River.
On Oct. 1, volunteers of the Iron River School Parent Advisory Council, the school's principal, and elected officials from the MD of Bonnyville cut the ribbon, declaring the park open for play.
The brand new and expanded playground at Iron River School was the cumulation of three years of effort from members of the Iron River School Parent Advisory Council, who needed to fundraise $400,000 for the playground equipment and installation.
The joyous occasion was made possible by numerous donors and in-kind volunteers.
Some of the project's biggest sponsors included the MD of Bonnyville, contributing $262,000 for the project and Canadian Natural Resources Limited providing $10,000, along with several other local donors and businesses.
The push to build a new park by the current parent council began in February of 2019 and received its final burst of funding on Feb. 9 following a MD council decision that allowed the parent advisory council to place an order for the equipment in early spring.
The playground's design and equipment was determined and voted on by Iron River students.
