Wind and snow contribute to numerous incidents

Roads are still in poor driving condition in a large portion of the province.

LAKELAND - Police in various areas of the province have released statements warning motorists of poor driving conditions, Jan. 31.

"The roads are reported to be very icy, as well as very low visibility due to high winds and blowing snow," according to RCMP in the Vegreville area, in a statement sent out earlier this afternoon. Travel was not recommended in the region.

Earlier in the morning, Alberta RCMP released a general statement urging caution "in north and central and eastern Alberta due to weather."

Motorists were told to expect icy, blizzard conditions with lower visibility on roadways throughout the Edmonton area, and Highway 2 from Ponoka north to St. Albert. A number of collisions had already been reported near Morinville, Redwater, Vegreville and throughout the area, as well as in the east, when the statement was issued at 9:30 a.m.

"RCMP advise if travel is absolutely necessary, motorist should use extreme caution and check 511 Alberta regularly for the most up-to-date information on highway conditions."

While the sun was trying to shine later in the day, wind gusts continued on in the St. Paul region well into the afternoon and St. Paul Education had already cancelled buses for Tuesday morning.
