Alberta Wildfire officials have released a weather warning for the Lac La Biche Forest area and much of the Lakeland region.
A Wind Warning was put into effect on Sunday in anticipation of gusting 100 kilometre per hour winds for the Lac La Biche Forest area that stretches to Janvier, Cold Lake, Wabasca and Smoky Lake.
The threat of strong winds comes as Alberta Wildfire officials raised the wildfire hazard level from High on Friday to Very High on Sunday.
"There is a wind warning in effect for this afternoon. Winds may reach up to 100 km/hr. Any wildfires that start under these conditions will spread quickly and be extremely difficult to control," said Alberta Wildfire regional Information Officer Leslie Lozinski. " Be very mindful of any fires you have today. Keep campfires small and under control. Fully extinguish campfires before you leave them as winds can stir ashes back to life."
For residents issued burning permits for larger fires, Lozinski says that during the high-wind warning, those permits are suspended.
"Burning permits are not valid when winds exceed 15 km/hr," she said.
Environment Canada has issued wind warnings for much of central and eastern Alberta today.
