The Bonnyville Blast U12 Girls soccer team was close but no cigar this past weekend at the Wetlands U12 Tournament in Bonnyville.

The Blast advanced to the finals of the tournament on Sunday but ended up losing a heartbreaker to the Cold Lake Bandits. The game was locked in a scoreless tie through regulation, which meant the game had to be decided by a shootout. In the shootout, Cold Lake scored three times compared to the Blast's one and thus Cold Lake captured the gold medal.

The Blast was awarded the silver medal after an impressive tournament in which they never lost in regulation and outscored their opponents 10-1 in the round robin.

The Limewires, who finished fourth after falling in the bronze medal game 1-0 to Lac La Biche, also represented Bonnyville in the girls category.

On the boys side, the Bonnyville Jets had ties in both of their round robin games and then advanced to the medal round against Lac La Biche. The Jets then soundly defeated Lac La Biche 5-2 and then defeated St.Paul 3-1 to win the bronze medal.

The Cold Lake Hornets took home the gold, going undefeated throughout the tournament, while Wainwright captured the silver.

A total of 17 teams took part in the U12 tournament, which was spread out over Saturday and Sunday.

The Wetlands Tournament continues on June 12 with U6, U8 and U10 teams participating.
