Saturday night at the Ag-Corral was the setting for a night of honky tonkin' good fun as St. Paul's annual Bull-a-Rama was held in front of a packed crowd at the Ag Corral. The annual event is put on by TLRR Bull-a-Rama Club, and is usually a great success and it did not disappoint this year.
Trach Rodeo supplied the bucking bulls for the night and the bulls were great performers, putting on a great show and a hard task for the rough and tough cowboys trying to tame a bull and bring home some iron in the form of a buckle.
Kids' wild pony races were also part of the show as local kids made teams of three to see who could hop on the pony first. After the dust had settled, local band Boomtown rocked the house for a dance for all the fans and cowboys that were ready to party after the bucking had ceased.
Out of 39 total rides throughout the night, only six rides were officially scored, meaning the bulls were really doing their job and making it hard for the riders to stay on. Travis Maguire came out of the long go with a score of 87, winning the long run event on the bull “My Boy Blue,&” but later ended up injuring his arm, taking him out for the rest of the night.
In the short go, six cowboys returned and Jory Pankonin also put up a score of 87 but on the bull “Stranger&”, which was enough to earn him a buckle.
The bulls had been at the Cold Lake Bull-a-Rama two weeks ago, according to Les Trach of Trach Rodeo, which contributed to the bull's great performance on Saturday.
“When the bulls sit all winter like last year, the more rides they get on them the better, they perform so it only gets better from here.&”
Smyl RV donated two bikes to give away to two lucky kids, and Cargill donated prizes for the wild pony races. Organizer Karen Trach was very happy to see a sold out crowd and all the community and sponsor support for the event.
“We have to give a big thank you to all the sponsors in St. Paul, and the surrounding community that supported our event this year,&” she said. “All of our volunteers that gave their time made everything run smoothly. We're just really glad it was so successful, and that people are taking advantage of it being a family-oriented event.&”
The night gave the rodeo fans a taste of what is to come as spring and summer edge closer, and rodeo season set to begin in a few months.
