Lakeland schools grab zone banners in cross country running in early October

St. Paul Regional High School won its 20th consecutive NEASAA cross country zone banner on Oct. 6. Also grabbing top spots at zones were École des Beaux-Lacs and École Notre Dame High School, both from Bonnyville.

LAKELAND - It was a Lakeland sweep at the Northeast Alberta Schools' Athletic Association (NEASAA) as teams from St. Paul and Bonnyville ran away with banners in the 1A, 2A and 3A categories, Oct. 6 in Vermilion.

Winning in the 1A category was École des Beaux-Lacs from Bonnyville. Taking home the 2A banner was Notre Dame High School, also from Bonnyville, and winning the 3A banner for the 20th consecutive time was St. Paul Regional High School.

The course in Vermilion known as the Becky Scott Trails, are challenging "and the most difficult we will face this season," according to information from St. Paul Regional High School athletic director Hank Smid. 

St. Paul Regional High School brought 28 students to compete at zones, and 18 of the athletes advanced to Alberta Schools' Athletic Association (ASAA) provincials, which took place Oct. 15 at Enoch Cree Nation.

Five of the SPRHS students also received medals at zones, including: Shawn Lysons, gold in Para; Ethan Loughran, silver in junior boys; Kaitlyn Foote, silver in intermediate girls; Brennen Riopel, bronze in intermediate boys; and Cailtin Quinton, bronze in senior girls.

All team members contributed and worked hard, garnering a total ol 1,805 points, which helped secure the 3A Zone Championship, 300 points ahead of the next 3A school, Cold Lake High School.

Junior women - Danielle Antoniuk, École des Beaux-Lacs

Junior men - Linden Adams, JRR

Intermediate women - Jessica Walsh, Cold Lake High School

Intermediate men - Jack Nichol, Cold Lake High School

Senior women - Olivia Lafond, École des Beaux-Lacs

Senior men - Cael Charlton, Cold Lake High School

Para - Shawn Lysons, St. Paul Regional High School
