WINNIPEG — Police have charged two men and issued a warrant for a third in a deadly shooting outside a Winnipeg soccer complex.
Police were called to the complex in July during the Canada African Cup of Nations soccer tournament, where they found one of the players, 22-year-old Mohamed Yusuf Abdullahi, with gunshot wounds.
Police said at the time they believed the shooting was targeted and not directly connected to the soccer event.
Const. Dani McKinnon says one of the accused was an acquaintance of Abdullahi and that investigators believe the shooting is tied to drug or gang activity.
Ibrahim Bangura, 26, and Norbert Kipala, 27, have been charged with first-degree murder.
A warrant for first-degree murder has been issued for 22-year-old Tresor Horimbere, who has ties to Manitoba and Ontario.
Police say he also has an outstanding warrant relating to a firearms case in the town of Hawkesbury, Ont.
McKinnon said it has been a lengthy investigation.
"Over 100 people were spoken to … it shows how much the community was invested in helping police with this situation and moving their investigation forward," McKinnon said Tuesday.
Police said it's believed the three accused were part of the crowd at the soccer tournament and they worked to conceal their identities.
Bangura was arrested Jan. 20 in Winnipeg. Kipala was arrested at the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre, where he was being held on an unrelated matter.
Both remain in custody.
