Disagreement in discourse is animosity

Our society has become so shackled by rigid political ideologies – the left and the right - it’s as if we should be neatly packaged into cans of reductive categories.

Nothing is wrong with differences in ideologies. I consider myself very conservative in both thought, politics, and upbringing. Does that mean that I agree with everything the “right” has to say, or disagree with everything the “left” has to say? No.

But I value constructive and rational discourse.

We say that disagreement is the cornerstone of a healthy democracy. That we should be proud of our nation’s diversity in thought and opinions – as the strength of our nation lies in the ability to bring people together, find a common ground, and work toward the betterment of all.

Yet presently, I couldn’t help but think of the imminent demise of a healthy dialogue - if it isn’t already dead.

There is no middle ground. Disagreement has become synonymous with animosity. Those who hold opposing views are demonized. Individuals are quick to label and dismiss others with differing views.

There is no hope. Hope is an illusion. We have become subjugated to the whims of ideological conformity.

But you may ask, has it not always been that way? Yes. It always has been that way. Thus, the rise and fall of kingdoms and empires in the past – burned to ashes.
