If you've been feeling feverish lately, it's not the changing weather: it's the bad rash of elections coming your way in the not so distant future. Far from hiding under the blankets and waiting for it to pass, such a malady requires immediate attention. The only way to deal with election fever is to delve deep into the issues, consider running for a position, and to vote for the best candidates.
On Oct. 18, Bonnyville and MD residents will choose who they want to lead the community for the next three years. In the MD election, all incumbents are running for re-election - so your job as a voter is to decide whether or not they deserve their seats. Also all incumbents are seeking re-election for the Town of Bonnyville.
While all incumbents have worked to the best of their abilities for the MD and Town, it's never a bad idea to get some fresh blood or to stir the pot a bit. Elections are a time for discussion - and appraisal - on where we are and where we as a community want to go. So if you're burning to exercise your political muscles and get in the ring of municipal politics, remember the no-nonsense Sept. 20, 12 p.m. sharp deadline for Town and MD elections.
Also in electoral news are school board elections for Northern Lights, Lakeland Catholic, and Conseil Scholaire Centre-Est on the same day. With a few vacancies already announced, some new faces in the boardroom are in order. (If you're teeter-tottering on running for a Northern Lights trustee position, know that the bi-monthly meetings include a catered lunch).
Big changes are underway with Alberta Education in recent years, meaning school boards are busy figuring out how to best implement the changes in schools. Now is the time to throw your hat in the ring if you want to see some changes in the way your children are educated.
So grab some nomination papers and get the required signatures - and follow the Nouvelle over the next few weeks for full coverage.
